Shiatsu

shiatsuShiatsu is a traditional, energetic, Japanese massage. The pressure of the palms, thumbs, fingers, elbows, knees or feet is applied on the body while clothes are on.

We offer three variations of shiatsu. They are as follows:

  1. Zen shiatsu -This is a very relaxing form of massage which can be used for prevention of diseases.
  2. Shiatsu therapy -This form focuses more specifically on healing and balancing of energies in the body.
  3. Barefoot Shiatsu -This is also a very relaxing form of massage which uses the pressure of the feet mostly.

I'm not going to go into much detail here with regards to the history of Shiatsu as it can be easily found on the internet, but I’d rather provide an overview of some of its theories on which it is based.

According to these theories there are ‘meridians’ or pathways in our bodies that bring energy into our bodies and internal organs from both the earth and heaven. When these pathways are blocked, energy is unable to circulate as it should and cause illness eventually. These illnesses can vary from ‘acute’ to ‘chronic’. The body is able to unblock these meridians through Shiatsu and reactive the flow of energy which promotes the body’s ability to heal itself. Once this harmonious flow of energy is restored within the body, one will be happier as well as healthier.

Another focus of Shiatsu is the harmony of ‘Yin’ and ‘Yang’. There is also the ‘Five elements theory’. Through the various ‘excess’ and ‘deficient’ massage techniques energies are balanced, along with the five elements. When harmony is achieved between these various systems wellbeing will be present.
Shiatsu also works on ‘Hara’, which works like an energetic centre. When the body is in a well balanced status, one can begin to work with the ‘Hara’ through various exercises which will increases vitality in daily life. However it is more advanced work.
